Blepharoplasty
Eyelid Surgery
The skin surrounding the eyes is very delicate, and under-eye bags or drooping eyelids can make a person appear tired and older than he or she wishes. A relatively minor procedure called a blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, can make a person look refreshed and years younger by removing excess skin from above the eyes and pockets of fat from underneath. Results can be especially effective when combined with another surgery, such as a brow lift or a forehead lift.
If the upper eyelid skin is sagging enough to cause trouble seeing, often insurance will cover the procedure. In this case, an appointment with an opthalmologist is made first so that a visual field test can be performed. If the opthalmologist finds that the visual field is compromised (usually periferally), then an appointment can be made with Dr. Jones. Dr. Jones will take pictures and write a letter to the insurance company along with the test results/letter provided by the opthalmologist. If this is a covered benefit, the insurance company may approve the surgery. Insurance company policies vary widely based on the plan an employer chooses. Before beginning this process, it is best to find out whether this is a covered benefit by calling your insurance company and looking in the booklet of covered benefits provided by your insurance company.
If you are suffering from baggy under eye puffiness, then a lower blepharoplasty could be just what you need. This is a purely cosmetic procedure, but can easily make a huge difference. This procedure can also make you look years younger. The incision is completely hidden. Usually some of the fat pad located under the eye is removed, as well as some extra skin. After healing, the skin will be smoothed out providing a much younger, refreshed appearance.
